Arnak is a unique 45ft live-aboard, ocean cruising yacht.
A proven traditional design, combining the best of modern technology and beautifully hand-crafted natural timbers, she offers spacious and comfortable living on a very seaworthy and safe boat, ideal for extended cruising with large fuel and water tanks and a reliable engine - easily operated shorthanded.
The New Zealand owner, a qualified boat builder and shipwright, built the vessel for his own use. He and his partner have lived aboard and cruised extensively in Australia and South East Asia for 16 years. The yacht has been immaculately maintained in top condition.
Arnak is in turn key condition, ready for a new owner to step aboard and set sail.
Presently located in Malaysia, in the beautiful cruising grounds of South East Asia.
Arnak is a quality custom built vessel incorporating the owners extensive Shipwright experience and knowledge of live aboard cruising since 1980 when he cruised and circumnavigated in his previous Spray.

The main engine is a Ford 2712E 80hp diesel with a 2:1 PRM reduction hydraulic gearbox driving a heavy duty double universal joint through a thrust bearing mounted on a strengthened floor, with easy access from the aft cabin. The 1.5" 316 stainless steel shaft passes through a packing gland with a lip seal then to the cutlass bearing. The propeller is an H6 AutoProp, fully serviced with new bearings in 2017. The main engine drives a lay shaft on the starboard side through 2 x BX section belts and off the layshaft there is a 120 amp Bosch alternator with a smart regulator for the house batteries and the high pressure pump for the watermaker which drives off an electro- magnetic clutch. The exhaust riser was replaced in 2018 with stainless steel heavy wall tube section and water injection feed. The engine is fitted with a bypass oil filter which continually keeps the oil clean. Engine instruments are fitted in the cockpit in front of the helm, and monitor water temp, oil pressure, hour meter and starting battery voltage. There is a second 120 amp Bosch alternator fitted to the engine to charge the separate starting battery. Alternators are interchangeable. The salt water cooling pump is belt driven off the front of the engine and easily accessible.
Construction took 3 years using the modern strip plank epoxy glass composite method.
The core is quarter sawn Western Red Cedar 50mm x 25mm dressed, then 1150gsm triaxial fibreglass was applied with epoxy resin both inside and out to form a very strong composite hull. The keel and stem are cut from solid Kauri timber. Two extra laminations of glass were laminated over the keel area extending two metres on either side then a 360gsm glass cloth was applied over all.
A 12mm layer of epoxy resin and Ilminite was then applied to the bottom of the keel as extra abrasion resistance. The outside hull was faired using micro balloons and epoxy resin, followed by four coats of epoxy primer and undercoat. Below the waterline was then coated with a vinyl primer before antifouling. Above the waterline was sprayed with a top quality two pack polyurethane system. The whole vessel was completely repainted above and below the waterline in 2017.
The decks and cabin sides are two laminations of 19mm ply and the cabin top is laminated 12mm ply, 25mm cedar and 12mm ply, giving a total thickness of 49mm/2”. The whole is epoxy glassed with 617gsm double bias fabric and faired with Q cell and epoxy. Three coats of epoxy primer and undercoat were then applied and finished with top quality two pack polyurethane. A glass bead non-skid is imbedded in the top coat on the deck and cabin tops.
The floors are laminated and glassed ply, and ballast is Ilminite and lead, compacted between the floors and the cabin sole which is epoxy glued over the top with New Zealand Beech 100mm x 25mm laid over the ply and 2 pack lacquered.
Bulkheads are laminated and cored ply, epoxy coated and sealed. All half and full bulkheads are glassed to the hull with three laminations each side of bi axial glass and epoxy.
The deck shelf, deck beams and carline are laminated and solid Kauri. Cabin top beams are laminated A grade clear pine and the compression post beams are laminated Tasmanian Oak.
The rub rail/belting is laminated Spotted Gum, fastened with timber trunnels through the hull and deck shelf and capped with a D section brass strip. The bulwark capping and grab rails are solid Vitex timber. All laminating and bonding is with epoxy glue.
The bowsprit and cockpit sole are solid Kwila timber.
All paints are international standard colours; white, cream and dark green, and are available in most countries.
In the main saloon cabin there is a 400mm x 19mm toughened glass underwater viewing port with an O ring sealed safety cover and valve.
All interior white areas are sprayed with 2 pack polyurethane paint and timbers are lacquered.
Forward cabin with 2 comfortable berths. Aft cabin with a large double berth with inner sprung mattress. Main saloon with seating at table plus lounge seat, navigation and galley area. Aft heads with large shower and toilet area.
The AGM main house batteries are fitted under the main saloon cabin sole and the engine starting battery is located under the navigation seat along with a Xantrex 2000w 12v inverter with 100 amp smart charger monitored and controlled by a Xantrex Link 2000 digital panel.
Another 400w inverter is fitted under the Nav seat along with main battery switches and smart alternator regulator. Batteries are charged through the shore power battery charger, alternators and the 4 solar panels which are regulated by a MPPT digital controller behind the chart table. All switches and terminals are accessed behind the chart table. The AC electrics are also switched in a separate location behind the chart table and earth leakage/RCD is fitted to all outlets. There are abundant ac outlets throughout the vessel including the cockpit.
The refrigeration system is an ICEER, (intelligently controlled energy efficient refrigeration) a 12v air cooled unit with a top opening freezer and front opening fridge. This unit is very efficient. The Danfoss controller for the compressor was updated in 2018 to the latest model.
Electrics are 12v DC and 240v AC. Energy efficient LED lighting is throughout. Nav lights are LED and are wired through a voltage stabiliser which supplies a constant 12.5v regardless of supply voltage. All lights comply with international regulations. Spreader lights are fitted to the main lower spreaders and mizzen spreader for deck lighting as required.
In the cockpit at the helm station all engine controls and monitoring instruments are easily visible and alarms are fitted to the water temp and oil pressure systems. Navigation instruments are also located here, including the Furuno depth sounder, Furuno GPS, Vesper AIS and TMQ autopilot. The Autopilot is linked to the GPS which has a NEMA feed to the navigation station. Routing can be sent from the chart plotter directly to the GPS which then directs the autopilot for hands free steering along a route. This system works extremely well and is very reliable. Wiring connections and fuses are located in the console behind the instruments with easy access via the lid. Also at the helm station are 12v outlets and USB charging ports along with a double AC outlet.
The onboard security system consists of a 10,000v electric fence energiser where all stanchions, pushpit, pulpit, davits and alloy dinghy are active. A flashing red LED is fitted to the control box to indicate active use. This system runs off the ships 12v DC supply. There are also portable motion detectors with alarms which are fitted in the cockpit and across the main companionway. This system works extremely well.
The heads are fitted with a pressure hot and cold shower draining into a grey water holding tank which can be manually or automatically pumped out. The sink is fitted with hot and cold water and the toilet is custom designed for bullet proof operation and consists of a pressure salt water flush and Henderson diaphragm pump, through an in line macerator pump, with impellor removed for quiet, simple and reliable operation. This system has given no trouble since launching and is easy to use. There is a large integral holding tank alongside the toilet which can be directly pumped out or pumped out at a shore side station through a deck fitting. There is a diverter valve for direct overboard or tank flushing.
Masts and rigging were made by David Lambourne rigging in Brisbane, Australia and are deck stepped alloy with alloy booms. A large ProFurl roller furler is fitted for the headsail and an alloy wishbone boom for the staysail. The spinnaker pole is a large alloy section with swivel joint at the mast and beak at the outside end. The pole is mounted and stows on a track in front of the mainmast. There are two spinnaker halyards one of which is used as a topping lift for the pole. All halyards are external and secured to a pin rail with belaying pins in a traditional manner. Sails were made by Lidguard sails and are tan bark Dacron, except the cruising spinnaker which is yellow nylon. All sails are in very good condition. Sheets and halyards are double braid Terylene and Spectra. Rigging is all 316 stainless steel 7 x 19 around solid bronze thimbles and copper swaged. Rigging screws/turnbuckles and chain plates are bronze.
